Hello, everyone,

 My name is Guo Yan. Today I’m very pleased to have an opportunity to talk about some of my teaching ideas. My topic is Section A(3a-3c The Shirt of a Happy Man ) in Unit11. It is made up of five parts.

Part1 Teaching material analysis

1.Status and Function

 This lesson is the second period of Unit 11 from People Education Publishing house. The topic of the unit11 is talking about how things affect people. It is a fable about an unhappy king. As this is a story, students should know when、where、how、what、why the story happened. After reading it, students should understand what is true happiness.

2.Teaching emphasis and difficulty

 Emphasis:understand the text and figure out the definition of happiness.

 Difficulty:Retell the story.

Part2 Teaching Aims

1.be able to pronounce,spell and use the following words and expressions correctly and use them in the context.

Words:king,pale,queen,examine,prime,minister,power,banker,palace,wealth  

Expressions:call in,neither...nor,make sb +adj

2.understand the fable in terms of the development of the story.

3.use proper skills to finish the reading tasks.(skim and scan)

4.the students can better understand what is true happiness.

Part3 Teaching and learning strategies

1.Situational teaching method.

2.task-based teaching method.

3.Group cooperation.

Part4 Teaching procedures

Step1:Warming up

Use pictures to lead to the new lesson:

Look at these happy people.

Teaching makes me happy.

The toy makes my daughter happy.

Xie Na’s job makes her happy.

(Purpose:Attract students’ attention,create their interest,review the structure:make sb +adj  and lead to the new lesson.)

Step2:Discussion

What makes you happy ?( Discuss in group of four?)What is happiness?

(Purpose:Students can a785be up with many new ideas, the atmosphere will be warm.This activity provides oral practice using the target language.)

Step3:Happy tree

Wealth(money),power,family,health,fame,friendship,success

(Purpose:Students can learn the new words, practice the sentence structure. And it is a preparation of the passage.)

Step4:Listening

Listen to the tape and answer the question” Is the king happy?”

(Purpose:By doing this students can know the content of the story and can practice listening as well. In addition, students can correct their pronunciation and intonation.)

Step5:Fast reading

Read the story fast and answer the following questions in 3 minutes.

Who suggested the king should have a shirt of a happy man?

Who else was called in to help?

(Purpose:The answers of the two questions are the main characters of the story. The purpose is to develop the skills of skimming and gain the main idea of the story. Read the story in certain time can increase their reading speed.)

Step6:Careful reading

Read para 1 and answer the two questions.

When and where did the story happen?

What’s wrong with the king?

(Purpose:Help students understand the background of the story.  Reading para 1can lay the foundation of the following passage.)

Read Para.2and decide which sentence is true and which is false.

(1)Medicine can help the king.

(2)Rest can not help the king.

(3)The king needs the shirt of a famous person to make him happy.

(Purpose:The purpose of sentence 1 and 2 is to understand the usage of “neither ….nor…”. Sentence three can lead to the fable and can arouse students’ interest in reading the following story.)

Read Para.3, 4 and 5carefully and finish the table.

(Purpose:Students can get hold of the details of the story and can understand how the story developed. It can also help them find out that power, money and fame can’t make people happy. So we can achieve the moral aim of this lesson.)

Step7:Intensive reading

Read the passage again and discuss : After reading the story, what do you think can make people happy?

(Purpose:Students can practice their oral English , learn the deep meaning of the fable and achieve the moral objectives of this lesson.)

Step8:Exercise  3b. Find words or phrases from the story with meanings similar to these phrases.

Step9:Retell the story.

Step10:Homework

1、Write the summary of the story.
