4. predict through beginning and ending

I remember the first time I met Roy. He was standing in the centre of a group of boys, and he was telling a joke…

…It looked as if there was about $500 there. I was so surprised that I just stood there, holding the notes in my hands. At that moment, the door swung open, and Roy walked in.

What do you think the story is about?

5. Read any sentences about “me” and “Roy”, and organize the major ones.

I

Para 1 I remember the first time I met Roy. "Popular boy,” I thought to myself. My name is Daniel. I was the new boy in the class. I was twelve and, having lost all my old friends, I felt shy and lonely at my new school.

Para 2 There were 33 students in my new class, … I started getting to know people. Roy and I bea785be good friends. We trusted each other and we could talk about personal matters, things that were important to us.

Para 3 Five years later, Roy and I are still in the same class…. Roy and I see each other from time to time, but we no longer close.

Para 4 I went inside to get it, and found Roy going through the pockets of people’s coats. In his hand he had a wallet---and I knew it wasn’t hisMy mouth fell open and I just looked at him. Roy went bright red. “I’ll put it back right now, ”he said, and he did so. I turned round and walked out without saying a word.

Para 5 I really hoped that Roy would explain why he had been stealing, but instead he started avoiding me. At the same time, small amounts of money started disappearing from students’ lockers. I wonder if the thief was Roy but decided not to say anything to anyone. I hope it wasn’t him.

Para 7 This weekend, having thought about the situation for a while, I decided to ask Roy about the theft, and this morning I went to see him. Roy was out, and I went upstairs to his bedroom to wait for him. It was a cold day and his jacket was lying on the back of a chair. I put it on and put my hands in the pockets. I could feel a lot of paper notes and I pulled them out.

Para 8 It looked as if there was about $500 there. I was so surprised that I just stood there, holding the notes in my hands. At that moment, the door swung open, and Roy walked in.

Roy:

Para 1I remember the first time I met Roy. He was standing in the centre of a group of boys, and he was telling a joke. When he reached the final line, everyone burst out laughing. Roy laughed too, a loud happy laugh.

Para 2There were 33 students in my new class, and most people weren’t very interested in a shy new boy. Roy was one of the few people who were kind to me. He often invited me to join his particular group, and as a result, I started getting to know people. Roy and I bea785be good friends. We trusted each other and we could talk about personal matters, things that were important to us.

Para 3Five years later, Roy and I are still in the same class. But just under a year ago, Roy’s father was knocked over by a car. He died a few days later. The family had to move to a much smaller house in order to manage financially. Roy, who had always been very close to his father, changed a785bpletely, bea785bing silent and moody. He had always been a clever, hard-working student but now he seemed to lose all interest in his work. He started losing friends. These days, Roy and I see each other from time to time, but we no longer close.

Para 4About three months ago, a group of us were playing football together after school. Having left something in the cloakroom, I went inside to get it, and found Roy going through the pockets of people’s coats. In his hand he had a wallet---and I knew it wasn’t hisMy mouth fell open and I just looked at him. Roy went bright red. “I’ll put it back right now, ”he said, and he did so. I turned round and walked out without saying a word.

I:

Para 1 I met Roy. Para 2 We became friends. →Para 3 We became less close. →Para 4 I saw Roy go through classmates’ pockets. →Para 5  I waited for Roy to explain. → ? →Para 7 I prepare to question Roy. →Para 8 I was surprised to see the paper notes. → conflict?

Roy:

Para 1  The first impression Para 2 We became friends. →Para 3 We became less close. →Para 4 I was seen to go through classmates’ pockets. →? →Para 7 I was out. →Para 8 I walked in. → conflict?

Q1: When I met Roy, what’s my first impression of him? [happy/ kind/ popular/optimistic] How is my new life in the school? [shy lonely long for warmth/friendship]

Q2: There are two “new” in para 2, but this new is not that new, what do they mean? [This is the new place, everything is strange to me./ people are cold to me, not ethusiastic to me.] So facing the new school life, how did we bea785be friends? [help me out of the bad situation : be kind to me/ invited/ trusted/share happiness and sorrow]

Q3: why did we bea785be less close? Roy’s father died from the car accident.→ Roy had to move/ changed/ scilet and moody/ lose all interest in/losing friends. As a friend, what should a person do? Did I do something to help him? I didn’t do anything to cheer him up. When I was lonely in the new school, What did Roy do to help me?

Q4: When Roy was seen to go through classmates’ pockets by me, how did he feel? Roy went bright red and said he would put it back right now and he did so. If Roy was really a thief, what should I do?

Q5: What attitude do I have after seeing the robbery? [not stop him from making mistakes, not helpful, passive everyone mistakes and is mistaken, not a785bmunicate, no timely help]

Q6? The money for the charity had been stolen, I suspected Roy did it.

Q7: why did I decide to ask Roy about the theft? When I waited for Roy to return, what happened?

If we can help Roy correct the mistakes, keep his secret, as well as protect his self-esteem, what is the appropriate way to help him? A friend in need is a friend indeed. One man can not be bad in one day.
